White Sox first-half awards
With the first half of the season winding down and the All-Star game around the corner I figured it would be a good idea to look back on the first half, a surprising one at that, and give my midseason awards. The first award goes to the newcomer that has made the biggest difference for the team this year. There are a lot of good possibilities for who best fits this award. All of the new pla given yers that came to the Sox during the off-season have had pretty decent years so far. But for the purpose of this award, I would say that this award should go to Carlos Quentin.
At the beginning of the off-season, it wasn’t clear whether or not Carlos was even going to play this season. But he gets this award not only for coming back after an injury and playing great this season, but also because when the offense is struggling he was able to carry the team for long periods of time until the offense began to catch up to him. Without Carlos Quentin, we probably aren’t where we are today.
Apologies to: Alexei Ramirez, Orlando Cabrera, and Nick Swisher
the second award is given to the Cy Young of our pitching staff
John Danks
although he has a record of 7 — 4, he is by far our most consistent pitcher. He leads the team in ERA at 2.72 and has had eight quality starts in his last 10 games. If John had any run support he could possibly have 10 or more wins by now. In order for the White Sox to stay where they are, you will have to have a great second half and get more run support from his team mates
White Sox MVP
if you’re looking for the most valuable player on this team, , look no further than Jermaine dye. Once again as in 2006, Jermaine is having a great year. While his homerun numbers aren’t as high as 06, his RBIs are about on pace, and he has been getting big hit after big hit all season. Along with Carlos Quentin, Jermaine carried the team for months at the time and has gone through streaks where he is just killing the ball. He isn’t just hitting home runs, is getting on base and has had a batting average over .300 for most of the season.
Team performance of the year
home sweep against the Cubs.
One week after being embarrassed at Wrigley Field, the White Sox came back and returned to form. After the Wrigley Field series there was a dark cloud hanging over this team, but they seem to ignore that cloud the next weekend and play great baseball. At the end of the season, we might look back at that series and say that it was the turning point that cause the lights to go on in our players heads and they finally broke through the ups and downs and began to turn the season back around again. They were able to do this this weekend and have been playing great baseball ever since.
Surprise of the year.
Alexi Ramirez
in the off-season when Ramirez was signed by Kenny Williams, many White Sox fans including myself were scratching our heads wondering why an unproven Cuban baseball player had been signed by a team that had recently won a World Series. However, in spring training once I began to see the guy play, I began to wonder if there was more to this guy than I originally thought. After starting the season in center field and then not playing for a while, he took over for one Uribe and then we really got to see who he was. He has been hitting over 300 since he began to play every day and has come through with big hits and amazing plays at second base that make you wonder why we didn’t sign him earlier. As Hawk and DJ consistently say, Ramirez is the best baseball player on this team, meaning that he has all the skills that are needed to play baseball. He also is very smart about the game. He is a consistent offense of and defense of player, something that a championship team needs. Hopefully he can keep it up during the second half, and possibly even contend for the rookie of the year award.
